Laytons ETL, the City of London-based international commercial law firm, has promoted Alexandra Bartrope to the position of head of private client. She takes over from Ian Burman, who established the team in 1989 and remains with the firm but has stepped back from management to focus on building his private client and charity practice.

Laytons successful in defending unfair prejudice petition against prosthesis disrupter
Judgment was handed down on 19 July 2023 in Re Mitt Wearables Ltd, in which Laytons acted for the 5th respondent Koalaa Ltd, the disruptive designer of soft sleeve prostheses. Koalaa is now set to revolutionise the market for prostheses and make comfortable, adaptable and affordable prostheses for all kinds of limb differences accessible to all.
Significant hike in Illegal Working and Renting Penalties
The penalties which can be levied against employers and landlords who, respectively, employ or rent property to overseas nationals who are in the UK illegally, are to be substantially increased from 2024. The Government announced on 7 August that the hike in these penalties is part of a range of measures to further deter illegal migration through “small boat crossings”.
